Greetings card design

I was commissioned to design this 60th birthday card for a gardening enthusiast. I experimented with a range of paper types and textures to create a simple design with a hand-crafted look. Making the carrots was the most fun!

SAFE flyer

I was asked to design a flyer for an illustration project I will be running at Poole Museum in January 2014. The SAFE project is aimed to encourage women who have not previously engaged in creative activities at the museum to learn new skills and develop a portfolio. I wanted the design to incorporate a range of art materials and techniques whilst also reflecting the nature of the key words in the project title.

Wedding invite design

I created this design for a wedding invitation using a recycled brown envelope I found on my desk. The design includes elements of collage and craft with the envelope paper being stitched onto a card background. I used rubber stamps to create the printed effect of the couple’s initials.

Little Pigs

This design was done for a competition for the National Centre for Children’s Books to illustrate a collection of international nursery rhymes. I used the idea of finger puppets to create collaged pig characters which would suit both the English and Jamaican version of the rhyme ‘This Little Pig went to market’.

“We wish you a merry Christmas!”

Merry Christmas one and all! This is a recent design for a promotional Christmas card that I will be sending out to a number of contacts this December. It was inspired by one of my favourite children’s books, Kenneth Graham’s The Wind in the Willows, and depicts a group of carol-singing field mice. I used a variety of textured papers to create the collage. Best wishes for the festive season! Rebecca x

Recent commission

I was recently commissioned to design a cartoon for a website linked to St Christopher’s Hospice. The image will accompany an article on the need for education in palliative care and the importance of bridging the gap between health care and social care. The brief was very specific and the client knew exactly what they wanted. I enjoyed drawing with inks for the first time in ages and added a few visual touches to get their message across.

MA 2012 Exhibition

I have now completed my MA in Sequential Design / Illustration at the University of Brighton and was thrilled to get a distinction for my final work. The exhibition went really well – a beautiful range of students’ art work from handmade books to animation and prints.

Thieves

This illustration was designed for a collection of images by Brighton MA students, published as a hand-made zine with the title and theme of ‘Thieves’. I was inspired by a childhood story, Cops and Robbers, in which the robbers appear in a series of mug shots. I used a selection of materials and photographs to collage some eccentric thief characters.

Word Art

Word ArtThis design was submitted for a Word Art competition, judged by collage artist Graham Rawle. The brief was very broad: to combine text and image to create a piece of word art. My design was inspired by a walk through my local area in East London, along Regents Canal and through Broadway Market. I took photographs of a range of signs and words and used them to create a short poem.
